PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Department of Education is expanding its investigation into Swarthmore College over new allegations of antisemitism.
The Office for Civil Rights said it received complaints that the Delaware County school “has not adequately and promptly responded to particularly egregious antisemitic propaganda on campus.”
It said a group called Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) posted a video showing an effigy of an Israeli soldier being doused with gasoline and lit aflame. The video displayed a term that Hamas uses to describe the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.
A Swarthmore spokesperson told the Philadelphia Inquirer, “This is not the first time this account has shared deeply offensive, if not reprehensible content on its social media account, which the College has condemned in the past.”
Swarthmore permanently revoked SJP’s affiliation a year ago.
The school said it believes the complaints that led to the expanded investigation have no merit, but it will comply with the law.
