PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are warning people to avoid an area of Fairmount Park where two men were attacked and injured by “vicious dogs” Friday morning.
Police were called to Chamounix Drive near Ford Road around 2:30 a.m. for a report of vicious pit bulls.
When they arrived, they called ACCT Philly for help. One member attempted to contain a dog, but it fought back and knocked them over before charging at one of the officers.
The officer fired his weapon at the dog and missed, causing the pack to scatter into nearby woods. That officer is now on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.
A few hours later, around 6:30 a.m. along Chamounix Drive, the two men, both in their 60s, were attacked. Both were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One is in critical condition, the other was released and is expected to be OK.
Police say one dog was captured in the initial fray and another was caught around 2:30 p.m., but others are still on the loose.
If you see one of these dogs, police urge you not to approach. Instead, call 911.
