‘Crudité Gate’ continues: Oz says if Fetterman ‘had ever eaten a vegetable,’ he would not have had a stroke

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The veggie tray wars are turning rotten.

John Fetterman, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, is firing back at Republican challenger Mehmet Oz after Oz’s campaign mocked Fetterman for a stroke he suffered earlier this year.

The back-and-forth finger-pointing stems from the viral so-called “Crudité Gate.”

Oz released a campaign video in which he talks about the inflated prices of produce in a “Wegners” grocery store — he either meant to say Wegmans or Redner’s. Whatever the store is, Oz also referred to the veggies as the more formal “crudité” rather than a simple veggie tray.

Many online mocked Oz’s word choices, including Fetterman, who used it as a fundraising opportunity. So of course, the mockery continued Wednesday — this time by Oz, whose campaign told Insider, “If John Fetterman had ever eaten a vegetable in his life, then maybe he wouldn’t have had a major stroke and wouldn’t be in the position of having to lie about it constantly.”

Fetterman tweeted back, “I had a stroke. I survived it. … I could never imagine ridiculing someone for their health challenges.”

Dr. Val Arkoosh, chair of Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and Fetterman’s opponent in the primary election, rallied behind him, calling Oz’s comments “disgusting.”

She asserted no real doctor “would ever mock a stroke victim.”

Arkoosh touched on the controversy during the press tour for Real Doctors Against Oz. The campaign of more than 100 Pennsylvania doctors has called out the Republican candidate for what they call his history of “spreading misinformation and factually incorrect medical advice” on his TV show.
