PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police have a suspect in custody after an assault and a nonfatal shooting that nonetheless forced SEPTA to close down Drexel Station at 30th Street for some time on Tuesday morning.

SEPTA officials say an argument between two men on the mezzanine level turned violent when one splashed water on the other, who then pulled out a gun and started to beat the man with it.

That’s when, police say, the gun went off.

Officials say no one was hit by gunfire, but the man who was beaten suffered injuries to his face. After the altercation, the victim traveled westbound on the Market-Frankford Line, and the suspect went westbound on the trolley.

“We caught up with the suspect at 60th and Chester, out in Southwest Philly, where we did recover a handgun, and he was apprehended within about 15 minutes,” said SEPTA Transit Police Deputy Chief Joe Fredericksdorf.

SEPTA officials say police used live video surveillance to monitor and eventually intercept the suspect.

During the investigation Drexel Station at 30th Street, the subway stop that serves the Market-Frankford Line and trolleys, was closed for about a half-hour Tuesday morning. Trains and trolleys bypassed the station until about 8:45 a.m.
