PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A South Jersey woman is free on bail after police said she caused a deadly crash in central Pennsylvania. She veered into oncoming traffic because she “freaked out” when a bug flew into her car, officials said.
Bernadette Cobb, 55, of Brick, Ocean County, was leaving a cleaning job in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 12 when she veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a Harley-Davidson.
Cobb told responding officers that she ducked when an insect flew through her open window while she was driving. Cobb’s passenger told police he grabbed the wheel but could not stop the crash.
The couple riding the motorcycle, 34-year-old Anthony Sones and 30-year-old Miranda Wormuth, died at the scene.
A GoFundMe established to raise money for the victims’ families describes the couple as “soulmates” of 14 years.
Hidden Valley Speedway in Clearfield said Sones was a competitor in the Four-Cylinder division, adding he was a “great man who will be missed by many fellow drivers, friends and family.”
Cobb posted bail the day after the crash. She is facing two counts of homicide by vehicle, two counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of reckless driving and related offenses.
Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 21.
