PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A drunk driver hit two pedestrians near City Hall Thursday night and fled, but police caught up with him and arrested him near Temple University, according to investigators.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. near Market and Juniper streets. Police said two men were waiting on an island to cross the street when a white Lincoln SUV popped the curb and struck them.

There were multiple people in the area at the time.

“At least five persons began flagging down officers who were in the area, describing what happened,” said Inspector D.F. Pace. “Officers spotted the vehicle continuing north on Broad Street and were able to stop it about 17 blocks later.”

Pace said the driver, a 63-year-old man, was obviously drunk. He is facing several charges, including DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

One of the victims, a 35-year-old man, is in serious condition. The other victim is in stable condition.
