Greased poles are no match for Eagles fans celebrating Super Bowl-bound Birds on Broad Street

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Greased poles never deter passionate Eagles fans, especially after a victory like Sunday’s 55-23 home win over the Commanders for the NFC title.

Thousands rushed onto Broad Street in Center City to celebrate the Super Bowl-bound Birds, flooding the street from every direction. City Hall was illuminated in green lights while fireworks shot off behind it.

“I’m glad we’re getting to the Super Bowl,” said Steve Wilderman of Old City. “The Phillies did great this past year. Glad to see Philly sports is doing awesome. It’s just a boost of energy for the city. It’s always great to see everyone come together.”

Once upon a time, the Eagles struggled to win the NFC championship game. Now, they just won their third in eight years — all of them at home.

The city always discourages pole-climbing, but many, of course, took to poles, historical markers, newsstands and anything else they could climb to shout cheers of joy from high above.

The Philadelphia Eagles are going back to their second Super Bowl in three seasons — the fifth time in franchise history. It’s a rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs, and if the Birds win, the celebration on Broad will be even bigger two weeks from now.

Eagles players celebrated in the locker room, too. The Eagles got contributions from up and down the roster with eight total touchdowns in their 55-23 rout of the Commanders.

After managing a knee injury throughout the week, Jalen Hurts was stupendous in Sunday’s game. He had four total touchdowns, including three on the ground.

Saquon Barkley set the tone for the game with a 60-yard touchdown run on the Eagles’ first offensive play. The defense forced multiple takeaways against a team that had not turned the ball over all postseason before Sunday.

But this isn’t the end goal. They want to take care of business on Feb. 9 at Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans.
