PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — AAA says nearly 120 million people are expected to travel more than 50 miles from home for the upcoming holidays. With an increased number of people hitting the roads and taking flight, the FBI and Transportation Security Administration have some safety reminders for travelers.
More than 7.8 million people will hop on a plane to their holiday destination. The FBI says passengers should stay vigilant and report crimes or suspected crimes either on flights or in the airport immediately.
The TSA advises passengers to get to the airport two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international travel.
Officials say there is plenty of information online and on the myTSA app that helps travelers know what they can and cannot bring on the plane. One of the most frequent things people mistakenly try to bring through are liquids, gels, aerosols or spreadables. Those items are limited to 3.4-ounce containers, otherwise they must be in a checked bag.
If you’re bringing treats to the holiday party this year, cookies, cakes and baked goods are allowed through the checkpoint, but some items like preserves, maple syrup, champagne and eggnog need to be in a checked bag.
Another tip, use gift bags. That way if a gift does trigger an alarm, it’s easier for an agent to check it, and you won’t have a second round of wrapping to do.
