PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Severe storms rolled through the Philadelphia region Monday night and packed quite a punch. Trees were knocked down, and many streets and basements were flooded. Some people were even forced out of their homes because of the damage.

In one instance, a tree fell onto two row homes on Jackson Street, near Levick Street, in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia. The roots of the tree ripped a chunk of dirt and part of the sidewalk out of the ground, and water filled the gaping hole beneath.

George, who lives across the street, said the storm intensified.

“When I came home, I noticed the wind got really strong. I haven’t seen winds like that in a long time,” he said. “I was upstairs in my house and I heard the loud crack, and that’s when I came down and looked.”

Two affected families, 10 people total, were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, which is also helping three people who were forced out of a partially collapsed building on East Tuplehocken Street in West Oak Lane.

There was street flooding in different parts of the region as well. It looked like a river flowing down some blocks, as seen on video posted on social media.

Even with all the damage, power outages were not as widespread as in previous storms. Only about 500 homes and businesses were still without power as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to PECO.
