WILMINGTON, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — Two months after a 19-year-old in Wilmington, Delaware, was shot and killed by police, dozens congregated at a church to support his family as they continue to demand answers.
About 70 people met at Shiloh Baptist Church for prayer and song, uniting behind the family of Kadir Skinner, the 19-year-old who was shot and killed by police on June 24.
His aunt, Lisa Flowers, said the last two months have been a struggle for her family.
“Our days are long, and nights are even longer. There is an emptiness that words cannot even describe,” she said. “There are moments when the grief is overwhelming. But through every difficult day, every sleepless night, we remain committed to seeking the truth.”
The Delaware Department of Justice released police body cam footage last month, which shows Skinner running, an officer shooting and cuffing him, and Skinner telling the officer he couldn’t breathe. The footage does not show what precipitated the shooting.
His family is suing the city of Wilmington for $25 million.
“It is important that Kadir’s name stays in our mouths, in our homes, in our conversation, that we do not let his death be in vain,” said attorney Chance Lynch, part of the legal team representing Skinner’s family. “And we need all of you to do that.”
The Delaware DOJ is still investigating the shooting.
