A New Jersey family refuses to use their backyard swimming pool or even walk on their lawn after they began experiencing a strange problem with electricity on their property.
The shocking mystery began after the Volk family installed an above-ground swimming pool in their back yard in Brick Township earlier this summer.
James Volk told WABC that members of his family started getting shocked almost immediately after the pool went in.
"My wife, my mother-in-law, and my daughter were in the pool, and my wife went to go clean out the skimmer basket," he said. "When she stuck her hand in, she got shocked so bad that she felt it down to her feet, like tingling, numbness."
Volk said the bizarre phenomenon happened again when his mother-in-law was standing in the front yard -- not even close to the pool.
"She felt something, same thing like my wife, from her feet to her hips," he said. "She was almost vibrating."
The Volks have had utility officials and independent electricians investigate, but no one has been able to determine where the charge is coming from.
"It's a scary thing," Volk said. "I've got a 2-year-old, she's my first child. I've got my wife here. I've got my mother in law here. We're scared to come out of the house and even walk in our lawn."
Brick Mayor John Ducey told WABC the city is aware of the issue and is taking steps to help protect the Volk family. He surmised the charge could be coming from a "stray voltage in the ground."
Utility officials are continuing to investigate.
