PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The FDA has expanded its cantaloupe recall, again, as cases of salmonella linked to the fruit have been reported in 34 states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
As of Friday, Dec. 1, the CDC reported 117 illnesses, 61 hospitalizations and two deaths nationwide.
The recall is for whole, fresh cantaloupes with labels “Malichita,” “4050,” and “Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique,” as well as whole and cut cantaloupe and pineapple spears in clamshell packaging from ALDI with best-by dates between Oct. 27 and 31. Vinyard cantaloupe chunks and cubes, fruit mixes, melon medleys, and fruit cups containing cantaloupe are also on the recall list.
Freshness Guaranteed and RaceTrac brands with best-by dates between Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 are also on the list.
As of Nov. 29, Kwik Trip markets, Bix Produce and distributor GHGA, which sent recalled products to stores like Kroger, Sprouts Farmer's Markets, and Trader Joe's were added to the recall.
According to the FDA, illness typically occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and usually lasts four to seven days. They recommend that anyone who bought the recalled fruits throw them away and clean and sanitize any surface they came into contact with.
