PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Federal Trade Commission says thousands of people in at least eight states, including Pennsylvania, are being scammed by fake text messages demanding money for unpaid tolls.
The message, which includes a link for payments, reads, "You have unpaid tolls. Please pay or risk late fees or legal action."
The FTC and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission are urging anyone who gets the message not to click the link but instead delete it.
If you did click on the link, be sure to get in touch with your bank to secure your personal data.
E-ZPass and Toll By Plate customers are also encouraged to use approved, safe methods to check their account status.
There have also been reports of drivers in New Jersey being targeted by this growing scam.
