PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A large majority of Philadelphia students have opted for an in-person return to classes later this month.
Roughly 120,000 students are scheduled to attend school in person starting Aug. 31.
However, amid concerns over the delta COVID-19 variant, about 2,500 new students have applied for the Philadelphia School District’s completely online option, called the Philadelphia Virtual Academy (PVA).
A two-week registration period for PVA closed on Friday.
Since 2013, PVA was offered for sixth through 12th grades, but this year, the district opened its cyber schooling to all grades. PVA students who signed up will have to leave their home schools, and their classes are not taught in real-time.
Nearly 640 students attended PVA last school year, and 507 in 2019-20.
PVA is separate from Pennsylvania’s 14 privately operated cyber charters.
