PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Firefighters battled a five-alarm fire at an auto warehouse in Tacony.
It started around 4 a.m. in a warehouse on New State Road, near Longshore Avenue. Thick smoke was seen from I-95.
“It’s a warehouse about one city block by approximately one city block,” said Deputy Fire Commissioner Carl Randolph. “The warehouse has abandoned cars, tires — you name it, it’s inside.”
A five-alarm response was called — about 60 fire trucks and 175 first responders. The building is next to the Delaware River, so firefighters also called in marine units to help get it under control.
There were no reports of any injuries.
As for air quality concerns, Randolph said crews will take samples for testing. Officials recommend that people who live and work near the scene close their windows and doors.
It took firefighters about four and a half hours to get the blaze under control.
