SICKLERVILLE, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A woman is dead and a man is in custody after a fatal stabbing and arson at a townhouse in Gloucester Township early Tuesday morning, police said.
Fire crews responded to the Independence Square townhouse complex, on the 100 block of Freedom Way, around 2:30 a.m. Some neighbors were evacuated, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.
Around 5:15 a.m., police were seen removing a body bag from the house.
Roy Ramirez, who lives across Freedom Way, said it quickly became apparent that it was more than just a fire.
“I was watching from my house, and then when I saw they were bringing out the body,” he said. “That’s when I tried to go outside to see what’s going on, and then we heard the family crying that ‘he’s crazy, he’s crazy.’”
Investigators said a woman in her 50s was stabbed to death in the house, and the fire was arson.
A man was taken into custody, and charges are forthcoming.
