PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One person was killed in a house fire Saturday morning in the East Mount Airy section of Philadelphia.

The flames broke out on 77th Avenue near Limekiln Pike just before 6 a.m.

Crews put the fire out quickly but according to Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel, when they searched the home they found the victims inside.

Authorities said a 76-year-old woman was killed. A 61-year-old man was rushed to Einstein Medical Center. He is in critical condition.

"Every second counts on these," said Thiel. "Our firefighters made rescues literally within seconds of arriving at this incident, and that's what gave these folks a fighting chance, and we're still hopeful at the same time that we mourn the loss of one of these occupants."

Another fire this morning in Overbrook forced people out of their homes, but nobody was seriously hurt.
