NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead and eight people are injured after a fire tore through a home in Camden County Thursday.

Emergency officials were dispatched to a house on Cooper Folly Road in Waterford Township around 1:15 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers entered the house and located a woman, bringing her to safety. They then went back inside to try and save an 89-year-old man but, because of all the heavy smoke, they could not find him.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The man, James Lucas, died.

Officials say five officers were taken to nearby hospitals and treated for smoke inhalation — two were then transported to another hospital for additional treatment.

They say two firefighters were taken to a hospital for burn treatment.

What caused the fire is not yet known.
