PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three people are displaced, and a firefighter is hospitalized after a fire broke out inside a South Philly row home early Saturday.
Officials said the fire started just after 5:30 a.m. in the basement of a home near 11th and Wharton Streets — about a block from Pat’s King of Steaks.
Those inside the home were able to escape without injuries but can’t return due to the damage. The American Red Cross is helping.
Neighbor Nick Cotelesa said smoke filled the streets as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, which posed a bit of a challenge due to apparent hoarding conditions inside the home.
According to our newsgathering partners at NBC10, a firefighter was injured but is expected to be OK.
“Everybody did a great job, to tell you the truth. And the community and everybody came together; one guy went and got Dunkin’ Donuts for everybody,” Cotelesa said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
