YEADON, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A firefighter is recovering after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in front of a Delaware County firehouse.
Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, Yeadon firefighters returned to their firehouse on Church Lane after responding to an emergency. Several firefighters attempted to stop traffic so they could back the fire truck into the garage, but a person driving an SUV tried to go around them.
“A driver proceeded to go around to get past traffic and struck my member in the leg,” said Yeadon Fire Chief Shaheed Summers.
The SUV continued driving. The firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury and was promptly released.
Summers said they are working with police to find the driver responsible, but he said this highlights a greater ongoing problem.
“It is very frustrating, and it happens quite often, believe it or not. We’re getting back to the station, trying to back the trucks in or sometimes going out on calls — people just do not move out of our way,” he said.
Summers asked for the public’s help to keep his crew safe so they can protect the community.
“Whenever you see an emergency vehicle with its emergency lights on or sirens, just stop, pull over, be patient,” he said. “We will be out of your way relatively fast.”
