Florida man arrested in connection with brutal beating death of elderly Philadelphia man

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Florida man has been arrested in connection with the brutal beating death of an 83-year-old North Philadelphia man earlier this year, and they are still looking for another suspect.

Mauricio Gesmundo Sr. was found bound, gagged and clinging to life on New Year's Day inside his home on Fairhill Street, near Fifth and Luzerne streets. He died a few weeks later.

"We were able to obtain the DNA for one of the offenders," said Deputy Commissioner Ben Naish.

He added that they matched 22-year-old Jacob McMann to evidence at the scene. He was arrested in Florida two weeks ago.

"He’s currently awaiting extradition to Philadelphia, where he will be charged with murder, robbery and related offenses," Naish explained.

Surveillance video shows two people at Gesmundo’s home, and family has said the victim would have never opened the door for a stranger.

"We very much want to identify the second individual," said Naish.

Two safes were stolen, containing thousands of dollars.

As with every homicide, there is a $20,000 reward leading to an arrest and conviction.
