PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A former nurse accused of neglecting the father of a former Trump security advisor has pleaded guilty, as part of a deal with the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office.
Christann Gainey, 34, was working as a nurse at Cathedral Village nursing home in Northwest Philadelphia’s Roxborough neighborhood. Lt. Gen. Herb McMaster, the father of former President Trump National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, Jr., was a resident there.
Gainey was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and related offenses in McMaster’s April 2018 death.
Prosecutors said Gainey failed to administer eight critical head checks after McMaster, 84, had fallen earlier, and that she altered health records to make it look like she did the checks.
Defense attorneys fought the case for four years in court. They repeatedly argued that the nursing home itself was short-staffed, and Gainey was essentially a substitute nurse who was left on her own to care for dozens and dozens of patients overnight.
Gainey pleaded guilty to tampering with records and neglect of care, and will be on house arrest for six months and five years probation. She is allowed to attend church one day a week, and can also have interviews and medical appointments. She can no longer be licensed as a nurse.
She will begin her sentence next month, nearly four years to the day of McMaster’s death.
