PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A free tribute concert in Wilmington, Delaware this weekend will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
The Dream Unfinished connects King’s legacy of justice to the current social and political climate.
“Not every era is only a decade,” said Elevate Vocal Arts CEO and Artistic Director Arreon Harley-Emerson. “There are some eras that last 100, 150, 200, 300 years. And so I believe we are still in the civil rights era, and so it is important for us to think about the dream that is unfinished.”
The concert, which kicks off at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, at Mt. Salem United Methodist Church, will feature the choral works of Elevation, Delaware's only all-professional diverse vocal arts ensemble, as well as poetry and spoken word.
Harley-Emerson says one moving piece is Mahalia Jackson’s “Precious Lord Take My Hand.”
“She sang to Dr. King on the phone and gave him the courage to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. And so we're representing that work, and then singing, of course, ‘We Shall Overcome.’”
The free concert is on Sunday afternoon at Mt. Salem UMC in Rockford Park, Wilmington. For tickets and more information, visit elevatevocalarts.org.
