PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Sixteen cars on a freight train derailed in Bucks County on Tuesday, including two that contained hazardous material.
It happened around 2:15 p.m. at the train tracks near Bristol Road, which closed between Brownsville Road and Old Lincoln Highway as crews from CSX, which operates the freight train that derailed, cleared the scene.
Some homes were evacuated, and a shelter-in-place was in effect for residents in the area. By 5 p.m., people returned to their homes, as McVey said the threat to public safety was over. Officials also evacuated a business on Old Lincoln Highway.
The freight train was carrying 72 total cars, but had no people aboard.
“At which point, 16, approximately 16 train cars derailed from the rail… the concern at the time was that three were designated as hazmat material,” McVey said.
McVey said two actually contained hazardous material and neither leaked in the derailment.
SEPTA’s West Trenton Line was suspended for more than four hours.
CSX is leading the investigation into the cause of the derailment.
