PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia Gas Works and the Philadelphia Fire Department have gone to repair the breakage of a gas line in the Powelton Village section of West Philadelphia that led to 350 students being evacuated from a nearby school.
Batallion Chief Anthony Bonpadre said it happened at about 12:30 p.m. Monday in the street at a construction site on North 37th Street between Filbert and Market streets.
"This building is under construction. While they were working out here they struck a high-pressure gas line," said Bonpadre.
"We determined we had to evacuate the school behind it, and approximately 350 students have been moved to another school."
Making things more difficult, emergency crews first had to dig down to a shut off valve to secure the leak.
As of 2 p.m., crews on the scene had the gas leak under control, and no one had to be transported from the scene for care, officials said.
