PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A gas station clerk was shot and killed during a robbery in Tacony early Tuesday morning.
Police are investigating the mini market area at the Exxon gas station on Torresdale Avenue and Wellington Street.
Shortly before 4 a.m., police said three men entered the store and somehow broke through the locked door that separates the clerk from customers, which is behind glass.
It was all captured on surveillance video.
“You can see them physically struggle with them,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “And that’s when he gets shot. After he collapses, you can see one of the perpetrators then remove the cash register from the office.”
The three men ran off with the money. When police arrived shortly thereafter, medics tried to treat the 67-year-old victim but he died at the scene.
Many people, including police officers, knew him.
“We know this store clerk worked here for several years,” said Small. “It looks like he was shot one time in the back.”
Officials did not say how much money was stolen.
Police are not sure if there was a getaway car, so investigators are still trying to figure out who the attackers were and where they went.
