PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)Google is going back to college. It’s part of a special partnership between the tech giant and universities in Pennsylvania, in an effort to get students certified in IT-related fields.

Google Career Certificates are coming to eight Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education colleges, according to board chair Dr. Cindy Shapira.

“Several institutions will pair this certificate program with their own high quality undergraduate courses. Now this is incredible, this enables students to earn college credit and an industry recognized credential at the same time,” she said.

Google’s Mark Isakowitz says this public-private partnership features certificates in data analytics, e-commerce, IT support and a number of other concentrations.

Google Career Certificates offer a fast and flexible training program that prepares learners for high growth in in-demand industries,” said Isakowitz. “Nationally, there are more than 2.4 million open entry level roles across the six Google certificate fields.”

Gov. Josh Shapiro says this partnership gives more students the opportunity to succeed. “Every student who earns one of these certificates will be connected to companies and jobs that are hiring these skills right now,” he said.

“Together with Google, we’re giving students tangible, real world skills that they can use to chart their own course to success.”

Pennsylvania residents who are not enrolled at a PASSHE university can also access the certificates at a number of nonprofit organizations throughout the state, including the YMCA.
