PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Temperatures can feel like triple digits this week as a heat wave blankets the greater Philadelphia region. A heat advisory is in effect now through Wednesday, July 30.

Cooling centers are available for the homeless or anyone who needs to escape the heat. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has declared a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for ozone on Tuesday in Philadelphia, Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Delaware counties. Health officials advise limiting outdoor time, and don’t overdo it if you have to be outside; listen to your body.

Check on neighbors, friends or relatives who may be at risk or don’t have air conditioning. Those at risk include older adults and the elderly, infants and young children, and people with chronic medical conditions.

Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat-related illness, including muscle cramps, headache, nausea or vomiting. Heatstroke is the most serious heat-related illness. It can cause death or permanent disability without emergency treatment.

Pets should also avoid being outdoors for long periods of time. Never leave older people, children or pets alone in cars.
