PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A helicopter made an emergency landing overnight in the middle of a pier in South Philadelphia, right next to the SS United States on the Delaware River.
It happened around 3:30 a.m. Friday on Pier 82, located along Columbus Boulevard. Three men and a woman were on the black helicopter, a Robinson R44 four-seater. Police said the pilot needed to land because more fuel was needed.
According to flight records, the chopper left Newark, New Jersey around 2 a.m. The helicopter is owned by Faith Works Aviation based in Coatesville, Chester County, and it appears it left Coatesville to go to Newark Thursday night.
Police said no one was hurt during the incident.
It landed “300 or 400 feet from the Delaware River,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small, “but the aircraft made an emergency landing. It was a safe landing. Everyone on board is fine.”
Someone in a pickup truck came by with fuel, and the chopper finally got off the ground again shortly after 7:30 a.m.
