PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Wednesday marks just the fourth Juneteenth celebrated as a federal holiday, so folks might want a reminder of what’s open and closed as Americans commemorate the day in 1865 that Union soldiers informed the last group of enslaved African Americans that they were free.

As with all other federal holidays, banks, post offices and government buildings and services are closed. School District of Philadelphia buildings will also be closed. There will also be no trash pickup in Philadelphia.

But major retailers like Walmart, Costco, Macy's and Target will be open regular hours. Pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens will also be open for business as usual.

Grocery stores like Shop Rite, Acme, Giant and Wegmans, and hardware giants like Lowe's, Home Depot and Ace Hardware are also open.

For other private businesses, such as restaurants, mom-and-pop shops and the like, be sure to reach out before a visit on Juneteenth.

One business that is very much open on Juneteenth is the African American Museum in Philadelphia, which offers online registration for free admission all day Wednesday.

AAMP also hosts an annual block party on-site. Find information about road closures and parking restrictions at Phila.gov.
