PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Officials have identified the 9-year-old girl who tragically died at Hersheypark on Thursday.
Sophia Subedi, of Harrisburg, was in the wave pool at the Boardwalk section of the park when the emergency occurred, according to a statement obtained by our newsgathering partners at NBC10. More than 100 certified lifeguards were on duty in the water park at the time, with 10 specifically assigned to the wave pool. Park officials said those lifeguards had special deep-water training and were certified by Ellis & Associates.
Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company CEO John Lawn said lifeguards, medics, and first responders attempted life-saving efforts before Subedi was taken to a hospital, where she died.
Lawn said Hersheypark is conducting an internal review and will fully cooperate with authorities.
“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family,” Lawn said.
