A new mural is being planned to honor the homegrown, four-time Grammy award-winning R&B group, Boyz II Men.

“It’s the heart of the city. Boyz II Men is the fabric of Philadelphia,” artist Shaheen Rucker said.
He was one of nearly 200 muralists who responded to Mural Arts Philadelphia’s open call to create a mural recognizing one of Philly’s most beloved R&B groups, known for songs like “Motown Philly” and “End of the Road”.

Jane Golden, founder of Mural Arts, said it’s long overdue, but things are coming into place quickly.

“We narrowed it down to three artists and 192 people applied. So that’s really exciting,” she said.

Golden explained that for a mural of such importance, all the stars have to fall into alignment with the right artist, the right wall and the funding, but with help from the community & City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, it’s full steam ahead.

“Thanks to Council President Johnson, we have funding and we have a great wall. It’s not too far from CAPA on Broad Street,” she said.

The mural will be located at 1122 S. Broad Street, just steps away from the group members’ Alma mater, the High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.

“I’m really looking forward to it and having them there at the dedication when we cut the ribbon! Yay!,” Golden exclaimed.

The mural dedication is scheduled for sometime in July.
