PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 51-year-old man arrested in New Jersey after going on a shooting spree in Trenton is now charged in Bucks County with killing his girlfriend in a Bensalem hotel.
According to charging documents filed in Bucks County, Orenthia Upshur, 51, admitted to shooting his 49-year-old girlfriend Maisha Coon last week, in a room at the Sleep Inn on Street Road in Bensalem.
Investigators said it was around 5 a.m. on Jan. 15 when someone reported an incident at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Trevose. They said a family member just told them he shot his girlfriend in a hotel room in Bensalem, though he didn’t say which one. Coon’s body was found after a frantic search of several hotels in the Route 1-Street Road corridor.
As detailed in the charging documents, Upshur told police he had his mind made up when he picked up Coon to take her to the hotel, saying he told her it was going to end tonight.
He is quoted in the affidavit of probable cause as saying, “Never in my life did I think I would be the one to be her demise.”
Around the same time police found out about the homicide in Bensalem, Trenton police were responding to shots fired near Parkside Avenue and Oak Lane. They said they saw Upshur force his way into a home and fire more shots before he was taken into custody. No one was injured by that gunfire.
Upshur has been charged in Bucks County with criminal homicide. He remains in custody in New Jersey but is expected to be extradited to Bucks to face those charges.
