PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The term "self-care" seems self-explanatory — doing things to improve your health.
The official definition provided by the National Institute of Mental Health is taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical and mental health.
There are many things that can be considered self-care, like meditation, prayer, exercise, reading a good book or just taking time to smell the roses. All of these things can help reduce stress and lower blood pressure as well as improve the way your mind works.
Psychologists say that most of us are not taking the time required for self-care and it can have a negative impact.
