PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Medicine has provided us with numerous tools to extend our lives, and we know that our own lifestyle decisions can also keep us healthier longer.
A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that despite these numerous scientific advances, modern medicine may be far less equipped to help people when it comes to end-of-life decisions.
The key issues of these decisions are centered on communication. Crucial conversations often don't happen. There is often a gap where a patient's doctor does not have important conversations with the family of a dying patient.
If this communication does not occur, it can lead to incomplete information, unrealistic expectations and unanswered questions for patients and their loved ones.
