PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A big change is coming for drivers on northbound I-95 who want to exit at Bridge Street/Harbison Avenue in Bridesburg — exit 27. The Bridge Street off-ramp is permanently closing next month.

PennDOT spokesman Brad Rudolph says after the ramp closes, drivers on northbound I-95 who want to get to Bridge Street will have to get off one exit earlier, at exit 26, for the Betsy Ross Bridge and Aramingo Avenue, and take Aramingo to Bridge.

The closure also means drivers westbound on the Betsy Ross Bridge will use Aramingo Avenue to get to Bridge Street.

PennDOT spokesman Brad Rudolph says variable-message signs will let drivers know of the change.

“I think [if] you miss it once, you won’t miss it again. We hope they’re alerted with the boards. We hope this message gets out, and this is beneficial for motorists and people traveling on mainline 95. There will be a lot of signage,” Rudolph said.

It’s part of a $268 million reconstruction of I-95 over the Bridge Street interchange. But that’s not all that’s changing.

Drivers getting onto northbound I-95 at Bridge Street will see changes starting next year, when construction begins on a new on-ramp at Tacony Street. But existing on-ramp will remain open while the new one is built.

Next year, the Bridge Street on-ramp to northbound I-95 will be relocated to Tacony Street, near the Dietz & Watson plant. PennDOT says the existing northbound on ramp will remain open until the new one is constructed.

The tentative date for the permanent closure of the Bridge Street off-ramp from northbound I-95 is April 18.
