NEW CASTLE, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware State Police identified 28-year-old Tremaine Jackson from Wilmington as the man who was shot and killed by troopers last week in New Castle.

According to detectives, troopers were responding to a Lowe’s hardware store around 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning on Hessler Boulevard to arrest Jackson, who was under investigation for several crimes committed in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Troopers say the officers saw Jackson leaving Lowe’s with a shopping cart full of merchandise, and when they tried to stop him, state police say he ran off, got into a parked car, and hit an unmarked police car as he attempted to drive away.

Investigators say troopers gave more than one command for Jackson to stop, and he allegedly resisted when they tried to get him out of his car. They say the way Jackson was driving was dangerous and could have seriously hurt the officers.

Officials say a trooper then got pinned between Jackson’s car and a guardrail. That’s when two troopers shot at him.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

The two troopers — 12 and four-year veterans with Delaware State Police — will be on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
