PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It may be harmless — even preferable — for people to avoid bringing up their battle with toenail fungus at a dinner party. But many people won't even bring it up with their doctor.

A fungal infection starts in nails after the fungus invades a crack in the nail or surrounding skin. The problem with avoiding it is that you are helping the fungus thrive by letting it grow.

The price can be brittle nails that become discolored — usually white or yellow — and get thicker and thicker. Over the counter medications can work, but often an oral medication is required to truly get rid of the fungus.

The best way to deal with a fungus is early treatment, trimming toenails regularly and wearing shoes in locker rooms and pool areas.
