PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — COVID-19 was particularly deadly in the first year of the pandemic. One in three hospitalized patients died within thirty days of admission in 2020.
A new study from the University of Pennsylvania found that some hospitals fared better than others during that time and were able to prevent patient deaths. According to the study, hospitals that staffed nursing in critical units at one nurse per four patients performed better.
Each additional patient added to that number increased the patient's risk of dying during hospitalization by 20%. The importance of nursing in patient care can't be stressed enough.
