PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Insomnia Cookies has been a hit in Philadelphia and across the U.S. since its opening nearly two decades ago. And now, the owners are ready to take their business overseas.
“We’re announcing our global expansion,” said Lisa Tabers, director of strategic growth at Insomnia. “We are just continuing to grow by the day.”
Seth Berkowitz, a University of Pennsylvania alumnus, founded the company in 2003 as a way to get late-night treats to college students.
With 235 locations across the country, they will be expanding their operations to the United Kingdom and Canada. They plan to open as many as 100 new shops in the two countries over the next few years.
“It’s exciting to share our cult brand internationally with college students in the greater Toronto area and in Manchester, United Kingdom as well,” Tabers said.
Tabers says the stores abroad will have the same menu as the ones in the U.S., but they plan to develop new recipes to satisfy their new customers’ taste buds.

“We certainly have done the market research to understand how we can keep our core cookies and what makes us Insomnia true, but also culturally adapt to what’s needed.”
She also mentioned incorporating their CookieLab, which opened in South Philly in 2021 for guests to create their own sweet treats.

“We love the cookie lab concept,” she said. “We’re still tinkering and figuring out what we make is best and we look forward to expanding that as well.”
While expansions in Canada and the United Kingdom are the focus going forward, Tabers says we can also expect to see more stores open here in the states.
