PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — More than 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, and that number is growing.
Many are developing diabetes younger in life. Long-term complications of diabetes include the development of heart disease, nerve damage and kidney disease.
There are growing concerns about another link. A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association warned of an association between diabetes and dementia.
The report found that carefully controlling blood sugar can help reduce the chances of developing dementia.
The message is clear: People need consistent care for diabetes throughout their lives and to carefully monitor their blood sugar.
