PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The International Food Policy Research Institute has put a price tag on eliminating world hunger.
The money required to do this is $100 billion every year. According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine, people in the United States spend more than $800 billion on food-related health issues each year.
Americans waste 30% of the food supply on an annual basis. In the last decade, we have gained substantial knowledge about obesity and targeted treatments have become available.
According to the authors of the report, if less food is consumed, not only will Americans be healthier, but a reduction in diet-based expenditures will result in greater opportunities to address hunger throughout the world.
