PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — 2020 has been a year that people will never forget, for all the wrong reasons. And now, there's another issue to make you want to turn the calendar forward to January.
There is, of course, great symbolism to be found in the object known as 2018VP1, the refrigerator-sized asteroid that is hurtling towards Earth.
"It looks like it's gonna pass through this portion of the solar system on November 2," reported Derrick Pitts, chief astronomer at the Franklin Institute.
Pitts said the asteroid poses zero threat of hitting Earth. And yet with all the disaster and disease we've dealt with this year, you can't help but wonder about the timing of this thing buzzing us the day before the election.
"It certainly is fortuitous that it would happen that way because it points to this possibility of a disaster that could happen," said Pitts.
"And the question is which disaster are we talking about, the disaster of the asteroid hitting the earth or the disaster of who gets elected?"
He said it's not going to hit Earth, NASA said it's not going to hit Earth, but this is 2020, the year of the great pandemic. Surely they haven't factored that into their calculations!
"You're right. I'd forgotten about that," Pitts admitted. "As soon as the asteroid considers the dire situation, it's gonna change it's trajectory and pile on and slightly alter its trajectory just to add onto the misery we feel."
Or worse yet...
"It's either that or aliens are gonna land on the front lawn of the White House. But then we're not sure if they're coming to reinforce their emissary or to take their emissary back."
Don't say we didn't warn you!
