PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A jury on Monday acquitted a former Philadelphia police officer who had been charged with perjury and unsworn falsification.

Prosecutors argued James Saxton lied under oath during a 2019 preliminary hearing related to a drug investigation when he said he saw two men engage in an illegal drug deal in Kensington. He was also accused of arresting one of the men without legal cause, and to have falsified police reports.

His defense attorney, Coley Reynolds, told jurors Saxton testified to what he saw, and he never lied.

A judge had previously dismissed the charge of official oppression.

Before his dismissal, Saxton had been in the police force for seven years. Reynolds says Saxton will try to get his job back with the Police Department.
