PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A judge has denied bail for a Philadelphia man accused of shooting a cop 10 years ago in North Philadelphia.
Eric Torres has been tried three times for allegedly shooting Philadelphia Police Officer Edward Davies in the stomach in August 2013, leaving him in a coma for weeks. Prosecutors say Davies and other officers were trying to subdue Torres inside a Feltonville convenience store.
Torres was convicted in 2015, but the superior court tossed it because they say cops didn't have probable cause to search Torres' home.
His defense attorney asked for “reasonable” bail to be set, stating that Torres is a changed man who’s been sober for nearly a decade.
Prosecutors recommended $5-10 million if bail was to be set.
Judge Diana Anhalt denied the motion, stating there’s no bail that could protect the community.
The date for Torres' fourth trial has been set for November 2024.
