PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A former Warminster police officer, who is accused of molesting four boys while working as a D.A.R.E. officer in the ’90s, is back behind bars after a Bucks County judge more than doubled his bail.

The judge called the previous 10% of $100,000 “woefully inadequate” and upped it to $250,000.

James Carey, 52, is charged with sexually assaulting four boys between 1988 and 2000. The 80-page grand jury presentment accuses Carey of using his status as a D.A.R.E. officer to “gain unique access to children.”

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, known as D.A.R.E., uses officials like police officers to go into schools and talk to students about the dangers of drugs.

The presentment, however, lists multiple accusations of Carey letting minors drink, smoke and do drugs around him.

Prosecutors requested the increase in bail, arguing Carey is a flight risk and a danger to the community.

The judge also ordered Carey to turn in his passport and his retired police credentials, which prosecutors say allowed him to carry a gun.

Court records show he has been unable to post the $250,000 bail and is in Bucks County jail.

Carey’s attorney said his client is not guilty of the charges and they look forward to their day in court to clear his name.
