PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police in Maine arrested a Delaware County woman after authorities found her 3-year-old daughter dead in a car.

According to Maine State Police, authorities had been trying to find 40-year-old Kelly Brown, of Havertown, and her daughter ever since concerned family members requested a wellness check on them.

On Aug. 9, a business in Milford, Maine, contacted police about Brown’s car. When police arrived at the scene, they found the 3-year-old dead inside her mother’s car.

Brown was arrested early the following morning and charged with manslaughter.

According to court documents, Brown claimed she was swept away in a river and separated from her daughter. The girl was trapped in a car with a dog for 15 hours; both died of heat exhaustion.

Authorities said Brown did not return to the car until first responders were already on the scene.

She is currently in custody in Maine on $50,000 bail.
