PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in Kensington late Saturday morning.

Philadelphia police said it happened just before 11 a.m. on Kensington Avenue near D and Somerset streets.

According to investigators, a sergeant was flagged down by someone who pointed out a 39-year-old man who was involved in a disturbance and armed.

Police said the sergeant approached the man, and a brief physical altercation occurred before the man ran away. The sergeant then chased him into the rear of a nearby property on the 2800 block of Kensington Avenue.

Officials said the man fell during the chase while carrying a gun, and a struggle followed between the man and the sergeant over control of the weapon. Police said the sergeant repeatedly ordered him to drop his weapon, and when the man began raising the weapon during the struggle, the sergeant fired one shot, striking him in the wrist and chest.

An anonymous witness told NBC10 the man had robbed a store on Kensington Avenue, and people were panicked.

"It went south really fast. People in the neighborhood were screaming and yelling at the cops. Everyone was running around kind of frantic."

The man was then taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

Authorities said a loaded firearm was recovered at the scene. The man faces charges of aggravated assault and related offenses.

The 36-year-old sergeant involved has been placed on administrative duties.

An investigation is underway.
