PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — High blood pressure is not extremely common in children under 17, but it is still something that needs to be detected and treated.

A new study finds that 4% of children have high blood pressure, but less than 50% have it detected and treated. This is very important because high blood pressure, the so-called silent killer, can have a damaging effect on our bodies over time.

For those who develop it early in life, there is more time for damage. Many children with high blood pressure can see dramatic improvement with diet and exercise. The key is detecting it and doing something about it.
