PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The consensus is clearly not if, but when.
Medical experts believe a COVID-19 booster shot will be needed, but there are two key factors to consider.
The first is how long immunity will last from the initial dose or doses of the vaccine. At this point, scientists are suggesting boosters one year after the initial vaccination, but this will be dependent on monitoring those who have been vaccinated.
The second factor has to do with the virus and how quickly it develops mutant strains, and just how serious these strains happen to be. The more people who are vaccinated, the less the chance of mutations, but we have to remember that this is a pandemic and resistant strains can occur anywhere in the world.
Vaccinations need to take place worldwide.
